Dienst Levende Have van de Nederlandse Politie

Friday Februari 23rd 2001, we had the opportunity to experience different aspects of tracking at the police " MOUNTED AND CANINE DEPARTMENT " located in Nunspeet Holland. One demonstration we were able to wittnes that day was the "Scentdiscriminationtest" .
The information below is about that test we wittnesed, but doesn't describe all aspects. This is done because of the length of this article.

The scentdiscriminationtest is a method to make a link between the scent (of the perpetrator) on an article found at the scene of crime and the scent of a suspect.

It has to be acceptable that the scent of the person connected to the crime is on the article (or scentsample).

* The type of material and the pollution of the article,
* The way it has been in contact with the perpetrator,
* The way it has been stored,
* How long it has been stored.

The preparation of the material for this test requires care and knowledge. The preparation has to be done by a trackdog-handler or a certified helper. To do one scentdiscrimination, the test requires, besides one suspect, another six (6) adults from who the scent is not known to the dog. Because of the way the test is done, it can be determined if the scent of the suspect and the other six people are "neutral" to the dog. The scents are "collected" on, for the dog, suitable material. Mostly stainless steel pipes or scentcloths.
The scent of the suspect is marked with an X , the others with the letters A upto and including F . The scent of person A is used as a "check" scent, where this person also needs to hold another article for scent which is given to him by the doghandler or certified helper.

The preparation of this test has to be done by a certified helper. It is of outmost importance that all mistakes are avoided and therefore these preparations have to be done by certified people.
The doghandler that will be doing this test has to do it "blind", meaning that he doesn't know the place of the different scents. The seven different scents (suspect X and the others A thru F ) are placed in two different rows. The order is determined by the helper by throwing dice. That way, in every row, every scent can only be there one time.

The dog has to do a "check" twice. Here the dog has to match the scent of person A on the checkarticle, with the scent of person A in the row. When the dog does this correctly in both rows and doesn't react/respond to the other scents, there are two conclusions to be drawn:

* The dog is, at the moment of doing this test, able to do scentdiscrimination;

* The scent of suspect X is not in advance interesting for the dog.

! In all other situation the dog is excluded/disqualified !

When the dog succesfully passed the first test, the second part starts with the article found at the scene of the crime. The same two rows with now the remaining 6 scents (suspect X and adults B thru F ) are used. The doghandler goes back to the first row where the dog is allowed to take one smell of the article.
When the dog chooses the scent of suspect X , he now has to do the same in the second row. It is allowed that the dog can smell the article again. If he identifies scent X again, the result of the test is: "recognition of the suspect ".
When the dog, in one of the two rows, doesn't make an identification the result will be "no recognition " . When the dog chooses in one of the two rows the scent of an adult the result will be "incorrect execution " .

It was a very interesting afternoon where it was great to see that a dog is able to identify different scents in a short period.

We would like to thank everybody who took the time to talk with us and was willing to show us the work of the trackingdogs at the Dutch police.
